The HP 2000z starts at $349 and the 2000t starts at $399 so this is a budget laptop offering that can be had for a very reasonable price. The design finish on the HP 2000 series is a simple charcoal colored matte finish. There is no glossy coating or bright colors to be had, it’s just a very simple and straight forward design. The screen size is a large 15.6” making this laptop best suited as a desktop replacement or one that is just moved around a home. The weight comes in at 5.5lbs so you could put it in your backpack and carry it around comfortably for a short distance, but it’s a bit too heavy if you’re walking large distances or doing a lot of travel.
Battery life for the HP 2000t is quoted as 7.25 hours and the 2000z battery life is quoted as 5.50 hours. That’s a rather amazing battery life for a 15.6” screen laptop, well above average for this size category, it’s nice that HP decided to go with a larger 6-cell battery instead of 4-cell even though this is a budget laptop offering. Often times manufacturers will skimp on the battery size and cut corners where they can on budget laptops.
The port offering is rather Spartan, there is no HDMI out port or any other type of high definition video out for that matter. You get 3 USB 2.0 ports, a monitor out port and media card reader — that’s it.
The screen is glossy which will make for more vibrant colors and is good for movie viewing, on the downside this will cause reflections in brightly lit rooms. The only resolution available is 1366 x 768, there is no option to upgrade to a higher resolution. This is pretty typical on budget laptops, for most people the standard resolution will be just fine so no big concerns there.
Overall the HP 2000t and 2000z could be a good fit for a student laptop, they’re cheap for one at $400 or less. Second of all they have great battery life, especially for a 15.6” size laptops. Finally, you get a laptop that can handle all the basic student tasks you’ll need to perform at a great price to feature ratio.
