Sony Tablet S Goes up for Sale on Sony.com

Sony has thrown their hat into the competitive tablet arena with two new tablets coming soon, the Sony Tablet S and Sony Tablet P.  Both tablets will use the Android operating system, the Tablet S will be a standard slate design while the Tablet P will be a unique folding design with 5.5” dual screens.

Sony Tablet S

The Tablet S is now available for order from Sony.com, it has a starting price of $499.99 for the 16GB version and $599.99 for the 32GB version.  Below are the tech specs for the Sony Tablet S:

  • Screen: 9.4-inch touchscreen display, 1280 x 800 resolution
  • Processor: NVIDIA Tegra 2 mobile processor
  • Weight: 1.33lbs
  • Wireless: 802.11 a/b/g/n wi-fi, Bluetooth version 2.1 + EDR
  • Battery Type : Li-Ion 5000mAh
  • Ports: headphone output, MicroUSB
  • Dimensions (Approx.) : 9.5” L x 6.8” W x 0.3”D
  • Camera : Front – 0.3 Megapixel, Rear – 5.0 Megapixel
  • External Memory : Full-size SD Card slot (for media exchange only)
  • Installed Memory : 16GB

Unfortunately there’s no exact quote for the battery life on the Sony Tablet S, but the size of the battery would indicate it should be around the same as other Android tablet devices of between 8 – 10 hours depending on your usage patterns.

Sony Reader WiFi

Sony also announced the launch of a new 6” eReader device, dubbed the Sony Reader Wi-Fi, model number PS-T1.  The new Sony Reader Wi-Fi is the lightest touch screen eReader on the market, it weighs only 6 ounces.  The Sony Reader Wi-Fi will be available in black, red or white colors and retail for $149.

Is there a student Discount on the Sony Tablet S?

No student wants to pay full price, so I tried to check out using the Sony Student discount program to get a price cheaper than the $499.99 on the Tablet S, but alas, no discount was applied so apparently students have to pay full price for this new tablet.  With HP promising more $99 TouchPads coming in October, I wonder how willing people will be to pay $500 for a non-iPad tablet.
