Amazon Releases iPhone App for Students

mzl.majfjusq.320x480-75Amazon has released an iPhone App targeted specifically at students, the app is appropriately named “Amazon Student”.   The Amazon Student iPhone appessentially bundles together a bunch of features available in other apps.  Front and center in the app is the ability to go to the student bookstore and scan UPC bar codes to find out if Amazon.com offers the textbook cheaper.  You can also easily scan an item and then use the Amazon 1-click feature to make a textbook purchase or trade-in a textbook.  Of course, Amazon includes the ability to scan and purchase other items you don’t necessarily need, such as DVDs, video games and electronics.  Hey, everyone deserves a break right?

The Amazon iPhone app is just another way for the company to promote its Amazon Student program which enables students to get Free Amazon Prime shipping for 6-months, and then $39.99 / year thereafter.  Regular customers have to pay $79.99 / year for Amazon Prime.  Amazon Prime is a membership that provides free 2-day shipping on any purchase you make, no matter what the price.  Usually shipping is charged on any purchase under $25 and 2-day shipping is a surcharge.  For those students that are frequently making purchases on Amazon.com the Free Amazon Prime is a steal (as is anything that’s free) and even at $39.99 it’s a great deal.

About AJ

I'm a big believer in the importance of technology usage in education, but not just having blind faith in technology gadgets and using them in a school setting for the sake of it. I review and write about technology devices such as laptops and tablets that have a clear purpose and provide a learning advantage for students.
