Lenovo IdeaPad K1 Tablet Launches, Student Discount Available

IdeaPad K1 tabletLenovo last week launched their entry into the tablet market with the IdeaPad K1.  The IdeaPad K1 runs on the Google Android 3.1 operating system, dubbed Honeycomb, that is optimized for the tablet platform.  The specs for the IdeaPad K1 are very similar to other tablets on the market, but there are some unique features that make it stand out, here’s a run down of the IdeaPad K1 basic specs:

  • Processor: NVIDIA Tegra T20 1.0GHz Processor
  • Display: 10.1’’ high-definition (1280*800), 16:10 widescreen, 10-point multi-touch
  • OS: Android 3.1
  • Screen: 10.4” x 7.4” x .5” (Height x Width x Thickness)
  • Weight:  1.65 pounds
  • Battery life:  up to 10 hours
  • Memory: Up to 1GB DDR2 memory
  • Storage: up to 64GB SSD storage
  • Wireless: Integrated Bluetooth® and 802.11b/g/n WiFi connectivity
  • Ports: MicroSD card reader, mini HDMI connector and optional docking port
  • Cameras: Integrated front (2MP) and back (5MP) mounted webcam

One thing that might jump out is the list of software included, and that is one selling point of the IdeaPad K1, it has more pre-loaded apps than most other tablets on the market.  Particularly valuable is the fact Documents to Go, a program that let’s you edit Word and Excel docs, is included with the IdeaPad K1 and you don’t have to pay the usual $14.99 it costs to install.  Being able to edit and save Word and Excel docs while on the go makes it possible to use the tablet as a productivity tool on campus.  There are also a number of games included for free, including Angry Birds HD, for those times when you just need to blow off steam!

IdeaPad K1 Pricing and Student Discount

Right now Lenovo is selling the 32GB version of the IdeaPad K1 for $499.99, you can choose between a few color options including a higher end option that is black and silver and includes a leather cover.  The price is already discounted from the stated MSRP of $599.99 and at $499.99 it’s the same price as the 16GB version of the popular Samsung Galaxy Tab tablet.  It’s also $100 cheaper than the 32GB Wi-Fi version of the iPad 2 that retails for $599.99, so Lenovo is certainly trying to compete on value with the IdeaPad K1.  Below is a screenshot of the IdeaPad K1 pricing on the regular Lenovo.com site:

However, if you are a student you can get a better price by using the Lenovo student discount portal.  After going through the student portal you will see prices drop by $40 across the line, so you’re effectively getting about 8% off using the student discount.  Below is a screenshot of the current student pricing on the IdeaPad K1:

To find the IdeaPad K1 in the Lenovo student portal, after you enter simply look for the top navigation bar and hover over “Tablets” and then select the IdeaPad K1 tablet and you will land on the splash page for the K1.
