If you’ve been waiting to get an Apple iPad at a discount then the iPad 2 announcement is providing just that opportunity. It seems that all those geeks that just have to have the latest and greatest version of any Apple gadget are busy putting their original iPad up for sale on places like eBay and Craigslist. Over on eBay the average selling price of a used Apple iPad 16GB Wi-Fi version is $305, originally Apple sold that version sold for $499 and has recently dropped the new price to $399. The high-end Wi-Fi + 3G 64GB Apple iPad is selling for an average price of $585, Apple is now selling that new for $729.
If the $300 price tag for an Apple iPad is alluring to you just remember to do your homework before buying from any old seller on eBay. Check for the seller feedback and reputation, make sure that the seller has taken clear pictures of the device and is being honest about the condition. An iPad that is scratched up and has lots of blemishes is simply not as valuable as one that has been kept in immaculate condition. Also make sure the seller is including all original packaging and material as that adds value. The charger itself is expensive to replace if you need to buy it from Apple.com, it costs $29, so make sure the seller is including that with the sale.
Some students are asking whether they’ll get a further discount on the Apple iPad via the Apple student discount, but unfortunately Apple is selling that through a special clearance website where the student discount does not apply. The Apple iPad 2 will also not have a student discount price, the original iPad never offered the ~10% discount students get on Macs and since the iPad 2 will be in hot demand Apple will not be discounting it either unfortunately. The first discount you’ll see on a new iPad 2 will likely be Black Friday 2011 in November which is when Apple gave a 10% off on the iPad last year.
