If you’re a student and need a cheap way to backup files online the new Amazon Cloud Drive that was just announced this week is a great cheap option. You get 5GB of storage free if you have an Amazon.com account, but if you purchase an MP3 album from Amazon.com you get 20GB free for a year. A normal year long 20GB storage subscription is $20, but you can buy an MP3 album for as cheap as $0.69 (69 cents) and get the 20GB for a year free. Here’s a link to a Glee Trouty Mouth Album MP3 that costs $0.69. After purchasing this using the “Buy MP3 Album with 1-Click” button you are upgraded to 20GB of online storage for a year. This promotion for 20GB free storage with purchase of an MP3 album runs until December 31, 2011 so you’ve got a bit of time to take advantage!
Whenever you purchase an MP3 song or album from Amazon it is automatically stored to your music folder in the Amazon Cloud Drive and the storage space required for the song is free, meaning it doesn’t count towards your 5GB or 20GB quota. You also have the option of playing your music that’s stored in the Amazon Cloud using the Amazon Cloud Player for either your PC browser or Android smart Phone. That means you don’t have to store all of your music files on your device and you can instantly get access to your music no matter what computer you are on or where you are. The only bummer is that there is no Amazon Cloud Player app for the the Apple iPhone or iPad. Also, there is no easy way to move files from your computer onto the Cloud Drive yet other than by uploading them one at a time via your browser. More established services such as DropBox make it very easy to synch files from your computer to online storage. Still, you can’t complain about the low price of storage Amazon is offering and the potential efficiency and convenience of having easy access to all of the music you buy.
