Many will have heard the news that the Apple iPhone 4 is going to be available on the Verizon network starting February 10th. The Verizon iPhone 4 16GB version will cost $199 if you sign a 2-year contract and the 32GB version will be $299 with a contract. The big question that remains is what the cost of the data plan will be and how much data will users be allowed to use in one month. Some rumors say there will be an unlimited data plan for around $30, the same as Verizon charges for current Android phones, but no formal announcement has been made so far.
Whatever the case, we do know that the minimum voice plan rate will be the 450 minute plan for $39.99 per month, then the minimum plan for texts is $5 per month for 250 text messages. Assuming that the data plan is indeed $30 then right away your plan cost is $75 before any taxes or service fees, which usually amount to over $10. Needless to say, the average Verizon iPhone 4 user is going to be paying between $85 and $110 a month. If you’re a student, that’s a lot of money when you’re on a tight budget, so the question arises – is there a Verizon iPhone 4 student discount?
The answer is yes there will be an iPhone 4 student discount, but only if the university has a relationship with Verizon. To find out if your school does offer a discount through Verizon, go to this employee discount page. Use your school email address in the field that says “work email” when filling out the form to see if you qualify. Verizon will send you then show you a success or failure screen for the discount, if it is a success you will get an email to your inbox with a link to click on and register for the discount.
Most schools that offer a discount will be around 15%, so if your Verizon iPhone 4 monthly bill is $100 you’ll save $15 and pay a total of $85. There’s no way to get any further discounts on the actual iPhone 4 hardware itself, but since it’s really the data plan that costs you the most in the long run it’s the better place to be getting a discount. Just think, if you’re saving $15 a month then over 2-years that’s a total of $360 in savings.
