Geico Car Insurance Good Student Discount

Car insurance is one of those necessary costs in life if you want to drive a car and get around.  A great way to save at school is simply to live on or close to campus so you can walk to class.  You can save on car payments, gas and insurance costs by doing that.  However, many students have to or prefer to live further off campus and use a car to commute to school daily, so you’ll need car insurance as it’s required by law.  Car insurance can be expensive, rates vary a lot based on where you live.  However, if you’re a high school or college student that has good grades you can get a good student discount on Geico car insurance.  Here are some common questions and answers regarding the Geico car insurance student discount.

What grades do you have to get to qualify for the Geico good student discount?

Geico requires you to get a 3.0 GPA or better for your prior semester to qualify for the good student discount on your car insurance rate.  That means you must have a B average or higher on your report card from the most recent semester that ended.

How much is the Geico good student discount?

It varies a bit by state and the type of car you drive, but in general the good student discount you get is anywhere from 8 – 15% off the regular rate.  For instance, I got a theoretical quote from Geico.com for a Toyota Camry driven by a 21 year old in Ohio that qualifies for the good student discount and the savings was $74 off of a premium of a yearly premium of $850, about 8% savings:

Does Geico require proof of grades to qualify for the student discount?

Yes, once you have received a price quote from Geico and purchase the insurance you have 30-days to provide an official transcript from your most recent semester of study to prove your B-average GPA and enrollment as a student.

How old can you be and still apply for the good student discount?

Geico offers the good student discount to drivers 25 and younger.  If you’re 26 this discount is no longer available, but on the plus side if you’re over 25 you automatically get cheaper insurance because you’re considered less of a risk!

Can part time college students qualify for the discount?

No, you must be in school full time.  For college students this means you must be taking at least 12 semester hours of classes.

I’m home schooled, can I still get a good student discount at Geico?

Yes, you can get a good student discount if you take the SAT, ACT or PSAT and score in the top 20%.

I don’t qualify for the good student discount, why does Geico offer this as it doesn’t seem fair and discriminates against those that don’t do as well in school?

You can have your own opinions, but the statistics show that students with a higher GPA tend to be more responsible when operating a vehicle.  That doesn’t mean that everyone below a 3.0 GPA is a poor driver, it’s just the insurance industry can only go on statistical averages and those averages say that good students do get in less accidents.

I have used Geico for car insurance in the past and found the process for getting a quote and buying insurance online to be the best out there.  The service you get when calling or dealing with claims is also top notch, so I highly recommend it for students.  To get a quote is very simple, just go to Geico.com and they’ll walk you through a few questions, spit out a quote and you can choose to purchase or not.  If you have above a 3.0 GPA just make sure to select that option during the quote process and the discount is automatically applied.
