If you’re the type of person that has multiple devices such as a laptop, netbook, iPod, iPad, SmartPhone and have files scattered all over the place that you’d like to have backed up and more easily accessible from each device then online storage in the cloud is the way to go. There are lots of services that offer ways to sync files from your devices into the storage cloud such as Mozy, Carbonite and Dropbox. However, all of these companies cap your file storage at about 2GB to non-paying members. The good news is that Dropbox is now providing a way for students to get much more free storage space. For every friend you refer to Dropbox they’ll give you an extra 500MB of storage, non-students only get a 250MB bonus for referring a friend. You first have to verify a .edu email address at Dropbox.com so they know you are indeed a student (although alumni email addresses do work). After your .edu email is verified just start referring your friends and family using a custom link that Dropbox.com provides you with and they’ll add 500MB of storage to the base amount of 2GB for each referral. You can go up to 16GB of free storage using referrals, so once you’ve referred 28 friends you’ll have reached your max.
The best thing about Dropbox is that it’s super easy to synch files from online to all of your devices and it’s also easy to share files with friends and family simply by sending them a link to a file in your Dropbox.com account. Dropbox.com allows you to easily to sync and share files across various operating systems such as Windows, Mac OS X, iPhone OS and Linux. Since it’s free to signup for a 2GB account might as well give it a whirl yourself if you haven’t tried it already, and then if you like it you can refer friends and get up to 16GB of free space. If you need more than that you’ll have to start paying a monthly amount, it’s $9.99 per month for 50GB of storage and $19.95 per month for 100GB.
