Apple today announced a new lineup of iPod Touch devices and there are still 6-days left for the “Buy a Mac, get a Free iPod Touch” promotion for students heading back to school. Naturally a few people have asked if they can apply the $199 rebate on the iPod Touch to the newest 2010 iPod Touch devices. After all, if you’re getting an iPod Touch now you’ll want the latest generation that offers dual cameras, HD video recording, retina display and Face Time. The 2010 iPod Touch 8GB costs $229 while the older 3rd generation iPod Touch 8GB cost $199, so there is a $30 price difference. Even if you’re willing to pay the $30 difference though it appears Apple is not including the 2010 iPod Touch as part of this offer. I recently checked out the terms and conditions for the online iPod Touch rebate offer and it has been updated to specifically disqualify the newest iPod Touch devices from being a part of this rebate program:
So basically you are stuck with getting the 3rd generation of iPod Touch devices as the free device with the purchase of a Mac computer. If you really want the latest iPod Touch you could simply sell the free 3rd gen iPod Touch device on eBay and use the proceeds towards the latest generation.

Arg I was really considering a mac because of the ipod touch 4g. Great way of apple to get rid of their extra stock though.
Well ya, its how/why it started. Basically every year Apple used to do it to clear inventory for a new iPod touch (each generation at least).
So if you see the summer deal for a free iPod touch, then it means they are updating the model 0_0
