Apple today announced that their 2010 back-to-school Mac offer will be the same as last years, you can purchase any Mac computer for school and you’ll get a free iPod Touch 8GB. You have to purchase a Mac and the iPod Touch at the same time via the Apple Education Store and then you can send in for a rebate on the iPod Touch. Apple will mail the $199.99 rebate so you’ll have to pay the total amount for both the Mac and iPod Touch up front. You just need to fill out the rebate form within 90-days of purchase to qualify.
The rebate is open to students, faculty and staff members of any public or private higher education institution, and parents of higher education students as well. The promotion starts today and lasts through September 7, 2010. If you don’t want the iPod Touch 8GB you can also opt for any other iPod device such as the iPod classic or iPod Nano, but can only get back the value of the iPod. So for instance, if you opt for the iPod Shuffle 4GB as your free iPod then you only get back $79 – so obviously the incentive is to go for the 8GB iPod Touch or 160GB iPod classic which both cost $199.
Some will be disappointed that there’s no option to buy an iPad with a Mac and use a rebate towards that, but since the Apple iPad is new and selling well this isn’t too surprising. Maybe next year for that offer!
