Student Discount Airfare without Proprietary Student Cards

International travel is educational, fun and something that all students should do. However, the costs for flights to far off countries can be very expensive and prohibitive for some. You can find cheaper student airfare tickets by purchasing the STA card and using that to qualify for discounted airfare, but an alternative way that doesn’t require purchasing an annual membership card can be found by using international flight search site Vayama.com.

Here’s how it works, simply visit Vayama.com and search for the international flight you are looking for. Then, in the filter area on the top left side select “student” instead of “adult”, see the screen shot below to see what the filters look like:

Vayama’s student discount airfares are for full time students under the age of 35 and for youth between 12 to 26 years of age.  Student discount airfares are also available to faculty members and spouses of eligible passengers traveling together.  So if your wife or husband is a student while you are not, you can still qualify for the student discount rate.

Savings using the student discount option vary by date and route, as an example I did a search on a flight from Los Angeles, CA to London, England:

As you can see, the cheapest flight available for full fare is $830 while the student fare is $718, so you save over $100, or about 13.5% using the student rate.  To sweeten the deal Vayama is currently offering a bonus $30 discount on all international bookings purchased through April 30, 2010.  If you’re a student looking to travel this summer or within the next year, now might be the time to do that.  For all the details from Vayama.com see this article.
