Is there an Apple iPad Student Discount?

I’ve been getting asked the question quite frequently if the Apple Student Discount available via the Apple online store offers a discount for the iPad?  After all, there is a student discount on Apple MacBook computers of up to $200 and it would seem the iPad can be classified as a type of computer.  Alas, Apple currently does not offer a student discount on the Apple iPad at the current time.  If you go to the Apple Education Store and you’ll see the price for the iPad starts at $499, just as it does for anyone.

Apple student pricing for iPad is $499, just like regular buyers

So the question is now, will Apple offer a back to school promotion with a discount on the iPad for students?  Last year Apple offered a Free iPod Touch 8GB with the purchase of any Mac computer, so it’s not out of the question that Apple would offer some type of discount on the iPad with the purchase of a Mac during back to school 2010.  For instance, last year when you bought a Mac as a student you got a $229 rebate to purchase an iPod, but you could purchase any iPod over $229 (which is what the iPod Touch 8GB happened to cost so it was free) and just take a $229 discount.  Therefore this year Apple might run a promotion that allows you to get a free iPod or apply a rebate towards the Apple iPad.  This is all speculation, but if you’re a student and looking to get an iPad it’s worth waiting until the May or June time frame to see what Apple comes up with for its 2010 back to school discount!

this would be great – just started grad school, and the plethora of readings in pdf form completely justify having an ipad for reading and annotating. reading on a laptop just kind of sucks, and printing defeats the purpose.

I really want an ipad for some of my classes. its light(er) than the laptops and really seems a very good alternative to taking hand-written notes

Just as an update to this, while not a student discount, Micro Center is offering the iPad 2 with a $50 discount on each model 9/22/2011 – 9/25/2011: http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0359947

Starting price is $449.99 for the 16GB Black model, but it’s in store pickup only :(
