Renting Textbooks to Save Money

Many of us have been watching news about the state of economic affairs and prices of oil and stocks falling, but the price of textbooks unfortunately will not be dropping.  They will continue the persistent march upward in price.  So what’s a student to do to get around the costs of buying a $100 (or more) textbook for a course that might last all of 10-weeks.  One solution is to rent a book instead of buying.  You heard me right, renting a textbook just like you do a car for a set amount of time while you need it.

Chegg.com textbook rental site

Chegg.com is the leading site for being able to rent textbooks.  The pitch is simple, you look up a book by ISBN, author or title on Chegg.com and then pay around 30% – 50% the price of what a full price textbook normally costs.  Chegg will deliver the book to you within 8-days, you use it for the current school term, then at the end you get a pre-paid shipping return box from Chegg.  If you really liked the book you do have an option to purchase it instead of following through on the return.

If you like to highlight a book you’re still allowed to do that.  You just can’t write in the textbook.

Of course there’s always the old-fashioned route of buying used textbooks from on campus bookstores to save dollars, but at least with services such as Chegg.com you can weigh the options you have and figure out which route will save the most money.
