Travel to Korea Provides Lots of Student Discount Options

Posted on 16 July 2008

While Europe is looking more and more expensive to travel to as the Euro currency continues to get stronger against the dollar and prices in that area of the world remain high, some parts of Asia might start to look more attractive to travel to.   Especially countries there that offer lots of cheap methods for students to travel around, get cheap housing and of course discounts on popular attractions.  Korea is one such place you might want to think about and look into — the country of South Korea is making a push to attract more tourists and one of those tactics includes making it accessible to students on a budget.

The Korean Tourism Organization recently introduced impressive discounts for ISIC Card holders in their new discount booklet called “Benefits in Korea” (call or visit your nearest ISIC office to get information on this).  The book contains discounts ranging from 10-50% off everything from visits to royal palaces and tombs, museums, cultural performances, entertainment, restaurants, theme parks, accommodation and transportation around the country.  You will have to have your ISIC card in order to get these discounts at the attractions though, an ISIC card costs $22.

Korea is a pretty reasonable country for budget travelers with a good range of budget accommodation, cheap food, transportation and sightseeing costs. These ISIC card discounts make it even cheaper for young student travelers.

Young travelers are encouraged to try Korean guest houses and backpacker’s hotels, which will cost approximately A$20 a night, with additional discounts of approximately 10% with an ISIC card.

For traveling around the country, you can get a KR Pass (Korea Railpass).  Again, ISIC card holders receive good discounts with a 3-day youth pass costing as little as $60 and a 10-day pass about $132.

The official Korean Tourism site can be found here, and ISIC has a nicely updated guide to events taking place in Korea that students might be interested in.
